What is the Bradley Method?

The Bradley Method®, also known as “husband-coached childbirth,” is a comprehensive approach to natural childbirth developed by Dr. Robert A. Bradley in 1947. This method emphasizes childbirth as a natural process, encouraging mothers to trust their bodies and focus on diet and exercise throughout pregnancy. It teaches couples to manage labor through deep breathing and the support of a partner or labor coach.

Central to The Bradley Method® is the active involvement of a supportive coach, often the partner, who assists the mother through relaxation techniques and comfort measures during labor. The method also emphasizes comprehensive education, covering topics such as prenatal nutrition, exercise, stages of labor, medications, cesarean sections, breastfeeding, newborn care, and the postpartum period.

Classes are typically structured over 12 weeks, providing in-depth preparation for both the mother and her coach. This extended format allows couples to thoroughly understand the birthing process and develop confidence in their ability to experience a natural childbirth.

By focusing on education, preparation, and partner support, The Bradley Method® aims to empower families to achieve a natural and fulfilling birth experience.
